Meghalaya : AICC flays decision to dismiss panel
News Behind The News

March 14, 2005

The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government’s decision to disband a newly-formed co-ordination committee under PCC president Salseng C. Marak has put chief minister D.D. Lapang in a spot of bother.

The MDA decision, which was supported by Lapang, has been questioned by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

General secretary of the AICC in-charge of Meghalaya, Ramesh Chennithala, who was instrumental in forming the committee to stop the Lapang government from breaking up, is said to be extremely unhappy with the MDA decision.

In December last year, following a revolt by Congress and a few ruling coalition MLAs, the Congress high command intervened and set up a co-ordination committee under the chairmanship of Marak.

However, in a sudden development, a couple of days ago, an emergency MDA meeting held at Lapang’s residence decided to do away with the new committee under Marak and give more teeth to the old co-ordination committee. The decision of the MDA meeting was communicated to the AICC. But the AICC did not act favourably and instead, asked Lapang to explain.

The AICC general secretary has also decided to visit Shillong soon to investigate the development and possibly ask Lapang to review his decision to disband the new committee.
