 |
The 2005-06 Meghalaya Annual Plan was finalized at Rs. 800 crores, which includes an additional Central assistance of Rs. 51 crores for special projects. During a meeting in New Delhi between the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Meghalaya Chief minister, D.D. Lapang, the State administration was asked to upgrade its mineral exploration programme and early implementation of growth centre scheme.
The State Government was asked to expedite the construction of identified roads, while it was pointed out that at the present pace the tenth Plan target of 850-km of new roads was unlikely to be achieved.
Private participation should be encouraged in setting up schools and colleges and an effective strategy should be evolved to check the high dropout rate.
Lapang said that both tax and non-tax revenues were growing, while thrust was being given to agriculture and energy sectors. Reforms in the power sector, including the corporatisation of the State Electricity Board, were in the offing. The documents pertaining to the budget were being made more transparent.
