Mauritius PM on economic mission to visit
News Behind The News

January 22, 2001

Mauritius Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth, has come to India on what is described as an economic mission. Mauritius is planning to set up a cyber city in the Indian Ocean Island and the primary aim of his visit is to seek India’ expertise in setting up an IT zone in his country.

Apart from the economic projects, Mr. Jugnauth would also be interested in cooperation in oceanography with India. Mauritius is engaged in an exercise to delimit its continental shelf to measure the extent of is exclusive economic zone. India can play a crucial role in this exercise.

Mr. Jugnuth who arrived in New Delhi on Jan. 15, will be in India until January 24, visiting India’s high tech cities of Hyderabad ad Bangalore, besides going to Chennai and Mumbai. Apart from the information technology sector, he would also visit Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd., Hindustan Aeronautical Ltd and the national Institute of Ocean Technology. In New Delhi, he met the President, the Prime Minister, and the Defence Minister, among other.

Addressing a meeting of industrialist and businessmen organised by the Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry [ASOCHAM] in Chennai on Jan. 20, Sir Anerud Juganuth invited Indian entrepreneurs to set up units in his country which will provide them an opening to the US market on a duty-free and quota-free basis. Mauritius is also enjoying preferential access to the European Union Market under the Cotonou Agreement. Officials say, as Mauritius was an excellent entry point for a much larger market in Southern Africa as well as North America and Europe, Sir Anerood’s visit would help to work out mutually beneficial agreements.
