Manipur : Warrants against 51 armymen
News Behind The News

November 07, 2005

An Imphal court issued non-bailable warrants on November 5 against 51 Army personnel based at the Leimakhong Army headquarters for disrupting supply of power to the city a day after Diwali.

The duty magistrate issued the warrants after Patsoi police station in Imphal West district registered a case against the personnel under instructions from state chief secretary Jarnail Singh.

An Army officer, identified as Capt. Pillai, and 50 Army personnel barged into the control room of Yurembam power sub-station in Imphal West district on Wednesday morning and shut down the power supply to the city for more than half-an-hour. It was restored only after the chief secretary intervened.

The Army personnel took the action after power supply to their cantonment was snapped for 15 hours on Diwali and the next morning.

The duty magistrate issued the warrants on Thursday and all the relevant documents were put up before the court of the chief judicial magistrate.

In the order, the duty magistrate asked the Imphal West superintendent of police to arrest the personnel as soon as possible on charges of disrupting essential services. However, there was no report of any arrest so far.

The Army, however, maintained that it had no official information on the serving of arrest warrants against any of its personnel.

Ban on outfits extended

The Centre has extended the ban on six militant outfits active in Manipur for two more years following a meeting of the Union Cabinet on Thursday, Nov. 3. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the rationale for the decision was the continuing anti-national activities that these groups indulged in.
