Manipur : Trial of 15 Mynamarese nationals on Oct. 5 |
 |
The trial of 15 Myanmarese nationals, arrested by the Assam Rilfes from Moreh last month for unlawful entry into India, will begin in the court of the chief judicial magistrate, Chandel, on October 5. They were picked up from Pangal Basti, a Muslim colony in the border town on August 17, and then brought to Imphal for interrogation.
The discovery of foreign currency in their possession led the paramilitary force to suspect that they had links with Al Qaeda, but interrogations yielded no evidence of this. The ar¬rested men also claimed that they were labourers.
The Assam Rifles who arrested them on suspicion of being Al Qaida activists handed them over to the state police. The men were charged under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, which deals with offences of any foreign national entering India without valid documents.
