The Army believes it is time for the Manipur government to sign ceasefire agreements with willing Kuki groups of the state. Sources said there are about a dozen Kuki groups in Manipur and most of them have ceased violence against the Army. “The Kuki and Zomi groups are not creating problems. If the Kuki groups can sign a ceasefire with the government, it would be good,” Maj. Gen. Ashok Samantaray of 3 Corps said. Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee had pointed out during his visit to Dimapur last year that some Manipur outfits are ready for talks. Naga body warns govt The All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (Ansam) has asked the Ibobi Singh government to respect the rights of the Nagas, urging it not to stand in the way of their political aspirations. The apex Naga students’ organisation in the Naga Hills of Manipur has sent yet another reminder to the state government, asking it not to encourage or inspire any protest or embark upon any course of action against the call for integration of Naga-inhabited areas with Nagaland. Assam Rifles accused of staging surrender After facing allegations of organising fake encounters and custody deaths, security forces have now been accused of staging fake surrenders. The Assam Rifles has been accused of forcing four “innocent” youths, all civilians, to surrender as activists of militant outfits. They were allegedly lured with offers of recruitment in the paramilitary force. However, a senior Assam Rifles official has rubbished the claim, expressing his suspicion that militant outfits had instigated parents of the recruits to make the allegation to tarnish the image of the paramilitary force.
