Manipur : ‘Chance’ shootout on Chief Minister Ibobi’s route
News Behind The News

May 22, 2006

A possible attempt on the Manipur Chief Minister’s life was nipped in the bud by a police team which intercepted a car full of militants and killed one of them barely an hour after Ibobi Singh’s convoy passed on the Imphal-Sugnu road en route to Thoubal on May 17.

The Chief Minister was on his way to Sugnu to attend a meeting organised by the Sugnu Congress committee.

The policemen gunned down a militant while one bullet hit a cop on his left foot. Two militants fled, leaving the car behind.

However, top police officials, including director-general of police A.K. Parashar, rushed to issue statements denying any link between the chief minister’s visit to Sugnu and the shootout.

Apunba seeks global support

The conglomerate of organisations that spearheaded the violent anti-army campaign in Manipur two years ago is back on the warpath. Apunba Lup, which is campaigning against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, will garner global support in its fight against “state terrorism” of the Centre.

The decision was taken at a convention organised by the Apunba Lup at the Manipur Dramatic Union auditorium in Imphal on May 19. This will mark the second phase of the Apunba Lup’s campaign in the aftermath of the custodial killing of Thangjam Manorama in 2004.

“The working committee of the Apunba Lup will continue to fight against state terrorism and highlight the excesses committed by the central forces against innocent civilians in Manipur before the international human rights bodies,” one of its four resolutions said. Another resolution reaffirmed Apunba Lup’s demand for repeal of the Army Act and immediately stop extra judicial killings.
