Left to oppose Pension, Electricity Bills
News Behind The News

April 25, 2005

The Left parties have said that they are opposed to the Pension and Electricity Bills and would soon write to the Prime Minister on the issue. Leaders belonging to the CPI, CPI(M), Forward Bloc and the RSP at their meeting in New Delhi on Thursday, April 21, expressed their unhappiness at the Government not responding to their notes on the two Bills. CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan said that the Left parties oppose the Pensions Bill on principle as they could not accept handing over pensions to private management. On the Electricity Bill, Bardhan said the CMP had promised a review of the Bill, but nothing had happened so far. He said the Left parties would support the call given by trade unions for a two-day strike by power workers from May 31.
