Kidnapping, killing of SSB officers : Delhi shows red eyes to NDFB |
 |
Mounting evidence of the National Democratic Front of Bodo¬land’s involvement in the kidnapping and murder of five Sashastra Seema Bal personnel and a civilian has forced Delhi to ask the group to keep its members on a leash or risk abrogation of the extended truce.
The ceasefire between the Centre and the NDFB would have lapsed on June 1 but for a six-month extension, which was decided at a meeting between both sides on May 27.
A source in the Chief Minister’s office said Delhi’s warning had been communicated to the outfit. “Delhi has made it clear that it will do everything for peace but reckless acts will not be tolerated. It has also asked the outfit to keep a close watch on mischief-mongers in its ranks. Otherwise the ceasefire will be reviewed.”
The NDFB has denied kidnapping and killing the five security personnel and the civilian, but police claim to have found clinching evidence of its involvement. Dispur, which has been playing the role of a facilitator in the peace process, has stated that the law will take its own course, irrespective of the truce.
Reports say a group of NDFB members, led by “area command¬ant” Lambu and his deputy Haila, allegedly kidnapped the SSB personnel along with a villager, Babul Kalita, from the latter’s house at Moradhansiri village on the night of May 21. Kalita was found dead the next day. The other five bodies were discovered inside a forest on Monday, May 29. The police have seized the vehicles used by the alleged killers.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, said in Guwahati that the outfit had emerged as the “prime suspect” in the incident. The NDFB allegedly targeted the SSB personnel to warn Delhi against dilly-dallying with the peace process. Babul Kalita, the villager from whose residence the personnel were kidnapped, lost his life ostensibly because the killers did not want to leave behind any witness.
