Kerala : Karunakaran puts off new party launch |
 |
The Congress in Kerala has geared itself up to face a split after the expulsion of former Pradesh Congress President K. Muralidharan. The split was expected to be formalised at a meeting called by dissident leader and former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran on Tuesday last (April 12), but a decision was put off reportedly due to the stiff opposition from Karunakaran’s family members and supporters. It appears that while his son, Muralidharan, wants Karunakaran to form a new party, his daughter, Padmaja Venugopal, is against launching a new party. Karunakaran has now called a meeting of his supporters at the end of this month to take a decision on the issue. Karunakaran said he would not take a hasty decision, but go through the process of consulting his supporters. The party workers’ convention would be held at Thrissur on April 30.
Earlier, the AICC had expelled Muralidharan from the party for six years for anti-party activities. Observers say that the Congress high command appears to be reconciled to a rout in the coming Assembly elections in Kerala. But the party wants to send a signal that there is no place for indiscipline in the Congress.
