Kerala : Congress heads for a split |
 |
The Karunakaran faction of the Congress in Kerala is all set to split the party at its convention on May 1. But in the meantime, the wily leader that former Chief Minister Karunakaran is, is sending feelers to both the party high command and other parties for working out a new arrangement. He is reported to have sent feelers to Congress president Sonia Gandhi to check whether after the expulsion of his son, Murlidharan, Sonia Gandhi will personally ask him to stay back in the party. The party leadership is unlikely to oblige him.
At the same time, Karunakaran had a meeting with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar in New Delhi on April 22. Both Karunakaran and Pawar remained tightlipped on their discussions, but sources say that the possibility of the Karunakaran group joining the NCP or his new group having a tactical alliance with the NCP in the Assembly elections came up for discussion. The BJP and the NDA also appear to be trying to fish in troubled waters, but Karunakaran’s son, Murlidharan, appears to be not keen on having a tie up with the BJP.
