Indo-Mauritian cooperation in IT sector
News Behind The News

January 29, 2001

India and Mauritius view the Information technology sector as offering tremendous potential for cooperation. A joint statement issued at the end of the nine-day visit of the Mauritius Prime minister, Mr. Aerood Jugnauth, to India said on Jan.23 that the two Prime Ministers agreed that India and Mauritius should enter into a “strategic partnership” to develop the IT infrastructure and training facilities. One of the priorities identified in this area was the setting up of a cyber city in Mauritius. The visiting Mauritius Prime Minister requested assistance for the project. Apart from the cyber city, Sir Jugnauth also outlined his country’s plans to introduce IT education from pre-primary to tertiary levels. It was agreed that both the projects could be implemented with the $100 line of credit from India to fund the supply of Indian computer equipment, software, resource persons and related infrastructural equipment. India has assured positive consideration of this request.

Elsewhere in the joint statement, Mauritius pledged its support for India for a permanent seat in the expanded UN Security Council. They called on the international community to intensify efforts to combat terrorism, fundamentalism and drug trafficking. They demanded restoration of democracy in Fiji and reiterated their belief that the resolution of the ethnic problem should be found “through democratic measures”.
