India, Mauritius discuss defence cooperation |
 |
India and Mauritius held wide-ranging talks on defence and security issues, including the regional situation and cooperation between their armed forces, on April 8. Defence Minister George Fernandes called on visiting Mauritius Deputy Prime Minister Paul Raymond Berenger and briefed him on the regional security scenario, including the Kashmir issue, defence sources said.
“Defence Minister Fernandes discussed the prospects of strengthening defence cooperation with Mauritius,” an Indian Defence Ministry official said. India currently trains a limited number of military personnel from Mauritius at its defence facilities every year. India and Mauritius have also agreed to jointly fight terrorism and strengthen bilateral cooperation in all spheres. Military officials from Mauritius participated as observers in an exercise by the Indian and U.S. navies in the Arabian Sea last December. The two countries are partners in the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation, which has been working to strengthen the security of important sea trade routes in regional waters.
