India, China define contours of counter-terrorism cooperation |
 |
India and China discussed the broad contours of their cooperation in the fight against terrorism on April 23, taking yet another step towards strengthening bilateral relations. Both sides described the discussions as being “useful in enhancing mutual understanding.”
The discussions were the first under the India-China dialogue mechanism on counter-terrorism set up by the two countries during Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji’s visit to India in January. Li Badong, director general (International Organisations) in the foreign Ministry, led the Chinese delegation. Nalin Suri, Joint Secretary (East Asia) in the External Affairs Ministry led the Indian side.
“Both sides shared their national experiences in dealing with the phenomenon of terrorism and exchanged views on international counter-terrorism, including developments in the region, cooperation at the United Nations and possibilities of bilateral cooperation,” an External Affairs Ministry statement said. “Both sides agreed that the first meeting of the dialogue mechanism was useful in enhancing mutual understanding.” The meeting agreed on terms of reference of the dialogue, the next round of which would be held in Beijing early next year.
