Gujarat: Modi charged with elimination of minorities
News Behind The News

April 18, 2005

Additional Director General of Gujarat Police R.B. Sreekumar has filed an affidavit in the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in Ahmedabad alleging that Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his top officials issued illegal orders for elimination of minorities and distorted facts about the riots situation in the State during his tenure as State Intelligence chief. In a petition challenging his supersession, Sreekumar alleged that Modi himself issued instructions to tap the phones of State Congress chief Shankarsinh Vaghela, former Cabinet Minister Haren Pandya and certain Muslim police officers and municipal corporators during the Gujarat riots. A diary annexed to his petition contains details of Sreekumar’s interactions during the period between April 16 and September 99, 2002 with Narendra Modi and top functionaries of the State Government.

Reacting to the affidavit filed by Sreekumar, the Congress has demanded a CBI inquiry into the charges made by Sreekumar against Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Union Textiles Minister Shankersinh Vaghela said that he would meet the Prime Minister to press for action against Modi for tapping his telephone. Railway Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav demanded that Modi should be dismissed as Chief Minister and Gujarat placed under President’s Rule. Two NDA allies, the JDU and Telugu Desam Party said that an enquiry should be held into the allegations made by R.B. Sreekumar.

PMO objects to Manmohan Singh’s photograph in a Gujarat booklet

The Prime Minister’s Office has objected to the Gujarat Government bringing out a booklet entitled US Refusal of Visa to Narendra Modi with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s photograph next to that of Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the cover page. The 47-page booklet with saffron bars on the cover has been published by the State Information Department. It praises the Prime Minister for what it calls standing by Modi when the US did not allow him to visit that country. The booklet is a compilation of statements and writeups that speak up for Modi. PMO objected to the use of Manmohan Singh’s picture without permission.
