Gujarat : Controversial arrests
News Behind The News

September 15, 2003

Baffled by the Jammu and Kashmir police’s claim of holding the chief architect of the Akshardham temple terrorist attack, the Gujarat police are questioning to bring Chand Khan.

There have been adverse reports about the arrest of five persons from Ahmedabad who the Gujarat police claimed to be the “local contacts’’ of the terrorist duo who attacked the Akshardham complex on September 24, last year, killing 33 devotees. The Kashmir police, based on Chand Khan’s statement, have claimed that there were no local persons involved in the attack and that he and his two terrorist accomplices had arrived only a day earlier to carry out the operation.

Entirely relying on Chand Khan’s version, even the State Congress has denounced the Gujarat police and demanded the immediate release of the five “innocents’’ arrested “in the name of local contacts to terrorise the minorities”. But the State police are not prepared to buy Chand Khan’s version in toto.

Rights activists have condemned the arrests in Gujarat citing it as a typical case of harassing the minorities on any excuse. They give more credence to the Jammu and Kashmir police version of the plot and the accomplices.
