Goa : Congress-led Government takes over
News Behind The News

June 13, 2005

A Congress-led Government headed by Pratapsinh Rane has taken office in Goa. This became possible after the Assembly byelections earlier this month in which the Congress and its ally, the NCP, won four of the five seats at stake. But the Government is facing problems with the NCP insisting that both its MLAs should be made Ministers. Only one of the two NCP MLAs has been given a Cabinet berth in the State. The NCP was not accommodated even in the cabinet expansion which took place on Friday, June 10. The NCP is threatening to pull out of the Goa Government if its demand is not met.

NCP national convention : Sharad Pawar hits out at “Big Brother” Congress

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has criticised the Congress for not taking smaller constituents of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) into confidence while running the Government at the Centre. A resolution passed at the national convention of the party at Surat in Gujarat, said that there must be a broad-based understanding among the constituents and supporting parties. The resolution said the verdict of the people in last year’s Lok Sabha elections was not just against communal forces, but also for a coalition government The resolution was passed in the presence of leaders of other constituents of the UPA.

Among the leaders who attended the convention were CPI’s A.B. Bardhan, Lok Janshakti Party chief Rambilas Paswan, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and JMM leader Shibu Soren. The Congress was represented by party general secretary Mukul Wasnik.

A day before the national convention , NCP chief Sharad Pawar sought to cast himself in the role of a mediator between non-Congress allies at the Centre.

“The constituents of UPA could not work together in Bihar and some other parties benefited by the division. We will sit together and discuss what could be done to avoid these things in future.”
