Foreigners’ issue : Delhi backs tribunals in affidavit |
 |
The Centre has submitted before the Supreme Court that a special provision for detection and deportation of foreigners in Assam was made following demands from various organisations in the state.
In an affidavit filed before the court on April 24, the Centre said people in the state were apprehending victimisation by the authorities in the name of detection and deportation after the abolition of tribunals under the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act on the orders of the apex court on July 12 last year.
The affidavit has been filed by the Centre in response to petitions seeking a stay on the operation of the special tribunals. The petitions have alleged that the move was aimed at nullifying last year’s apex court judgment. Assam BJP leader Charan Chandra Deka and AGP MP Sarbananda Sonowal have alleged in the petitions that the Foreigners (Tribunal) Amendment Order and Foreigners (Tribunals for Assam) Order, notified by the Centre on February 10, created a parallel and cumbersome adjudicatory system.
