The peace process between Dispur and the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) has run into rough weather with the ruling Congress trying to woo the outfit’s main opponents — the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) and leaders of the disbanded Bodo Liberation Tigers — with an eye on the Assembly elections next year. The ABSU and the erstwhile BLT leadership have always been allergic to the NDFB — the feeling is mutual — and any move by the government to appease the secessionist outfit could jeopardise efforts by the Congress to arrive at an electoral understanding with the combine. Union Minister of State for Home Sri Prakash Jaiswal said during his visit to Assam early this week that the Congress-led UPA government was not in a hurry to reciprocate the NDFB’s ceasefire offer. He told the media that Delhi would invite the Bodo militants for talks only after being fully convinced about its sincerity.
