Court martial sentence against Major stayed
News Behind The News

January 17, 2005

The Delhi High Court has stayed the court-martial sentence awarded to Major Surinder Singh of the Indian Army for allegedly faking killings on the Siachen glacier.

The sentence was stayed by a division bench of the Delhi High Court, which also issued notices to the government and the Defence Ministry on a petition challenging the court-martial order.

The petition had said the court martial order was mala fide and unconstitutional.

The court-martial pronounced its judgment against Surinder Singh in December.

The court of inquiry and the court martial proceedings were initiated following media reports about fake killings in the Siachen glacier, where Indian and Pakistani forces have been locked in a standoff since 1984.
