Congress heading for majority in Arunachal Pradesh
News Behind The News

October 11, 2004

In the north-eastern State of Arunachal Pradesh where polling was held on October 7, the Congress is heading for an absolute majority in the 60-member House. The party had won 15 seats out of 27 for which the results had come in till the final print of this magazine in the press.

The BJP, which was offered the State on a platter by Gegong Apang who is known for his politics of defections during its tenure at the Centre, could manage to win only four seats. The remaining seven seats have gone to Independents who are likely to play a crucial role in the formation of a new Government.

The Congress won three seats unopposed. If added one more to its kitty by bagging the Liromba seat, where its candidate, Jarabom Gamlin, defeated former party colleague and State Power Minister Lijum Ronya (Independent), ending the latter’s winning streak in several elections in the past.

The Congress was also leading in at least five other constituencies, including Namsang and Talia.
