India is planning to set up a regional technology and expertise demonstration centre in energy-rich Central Asia and to increase road connectivity with it. “We are looking at the possibility of setting up a regional centre in Central Asia to help local people learn English, join technical courses and develop their entrepreneurship skills”, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said while addressing an international conference on “Cooperative Development and Peace in Central Asia – an Indian Perspective” in Chandigarh on March 15. The Minister told delegates from Central Asian countries that they could also benefit from the white and green revolution of India. Development of small and medium scale units in India could be replicated in these countries, he said. He said, Indian companies could also contribute in areas like healthcare and education in these countries. He said, absence of direct road connectivity was major handicap in further developing economic and trade ties between India and Central Asia.
