BJP’s PM candidate after Advani?
News Behind The News

May 04, 2009

Not all leaders in the BJP are happy about the projection of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as being the party’s next prime ministerial candidate after Lal Krishan Advani. Asked for his views on statements by leaders like Arun Shourie, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu favouring Modi as the party’s PM candidate after Advani, BJP president Rajnath Singh sought to brush the question away. At an interaction with media persons and in front of TV cameras, Rajnath Singh obstinately refused to entertain the question.

Advani himself promptly clarified that he had no problems with Narendra Modi being seen as a PM nominee. Modi on his part said that Advani would be in contention even in 2014.

Giving a new spin to the issue, Advani said in Ahmedabad on April 28 that there are many others in the party who are capable of shouldering the job of the Prime Minister.

The Congress in its reaction to Modi’s projection, has said that Advani is a ‘night watchman’ for Narendra Modi. Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that the BJP is under the control of Narendra Modi.

Advani again speaks of Manmohan as ‘puppet’ PM

After keeping quiet for some time, the BJP has again started attacking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his allegedly acting at the behest of 10 Jan path. BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani speaking in Howrah on April 30 said : ‘‘The Prime Minister’s office at Race Course Road, New Delhi has lost its powers and all decisions are taken at 10 Jan path, the residence of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.’’

Advani said that Manmohan Singh being a weak Prime Minister is proved by the ‘fact’ that all his decisions have been subject to approval by Sonia Gandhi.

As for the third and fourth fronts, Advani said, they are just ‘‘fantasies of some people. The reality is that only a BJP-led or a Congress-led coalition government can be formed today.’’
