BJP’s first Government in the South lasts only a week |

The first Government headed by the BJP in the South col¬lapsed in Karnataka on Nov. 19 with the Janata Dal (Secular) instructing its legislators not to support the confidence vote sought by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who had assumed office just a week back. With no chance of sailing through the vote of confidence, the Chief Minister called a halt to the ongoing debate in the Assembly saying that he was rushing to Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation.
With the Governor recommending imposition of President’s Rule as there was no prospect of formation of an alternative government, Karnataka came under President’s Rule on Nov. 20, the second time in two months.
Observers say that things are now moving towards a mid-term poll in the state, with the Congress in no mood to respond to offers to form another coalition with JD(S).
There are reports that the JD(S) may split with former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy talking about floating his own regional party. He has also asked his father and JD(S) national president H.D. Deve Gowda not to knock at the doors of the Congress for cobbling up another alliance.
Both JD(S) and the BJP have now said that they want fresh elections to be held in the state.
Observers say that the JD(S) and the BJP fell out over the question of who would hold the Speaker’s post in the State Assem¬bly. JD(S) wanted that it should have the Speaker’s post. The party also wanted important Ministries in the state which the BJP was not willing to concede.
