Bihar : Another Paswan formula fails to take off
News Behind The News

May 16, 2005

The Lok Janshakti Party of Steel Minister Ramvilas Paswan put forward another formula to end the political stalemate in Bihar and to pave the way for the formation of a new Government in the state. The formula provided that the Congress should nominate a Muslim as the Chief Minister and the Government would have the support of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. Ramvilas Paswan met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and also Left leaders to pursue his formula. But it appears that there were no takers for the Paswan formula. The Congress was non-commital about the proposal while the RJD rejected it out of hand.

Paswan put forward his latest formula amidst reports that the 29 MLAs belonging to his party were getting restive over the continuing stalemate in Government formation. Many of them want Paswan to play a more active role in the formation of a new Government either with the help of the RJD or the Janata Dal United, which is a constituent of the BJP-led NDA at present.

In the meantime, Bihar Governor Buta Singh has said that there are no chances of early formation of a popular government in the State. He told reporters in Patna that given the arithmetic of the 243 member state Assembly, the chances of early installation of a popular government appear to be remote. Buta Singh claimed that there has been a remarkable improvement in the law and order situation in the state under Central Rule.

In a related development, two brothers of former Chief Minister Rabri devi, have been persuaded to vacate the palatial government bungalows in Patna they were occupying unauthorisedly.
