Bangladesh: BNP demands expulsion of Indian envoy
News Behind The News

June 29, 2009

Accusing the Indian envoy of violating “diplomatic etiquette” with his “objectionable” remarks on the Tipaimukh Dam issue, Bangladesh’s Opposition BNP has demanded his “immediate withdrawal”. “We want his (Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty’s) immediate withdrawal as the envoy has been making comments for long, violating diplomatic etiquette, BNP parliamentary chief whip, Joynal Abedin Farroque, said. “Pinak made objectionable comments on June 23 ignoring courtesy and rules, which is similar to interference in the country’s internal matters,” Farroque said.

The BNP demand comes two days after India criticized its “propaganda”

over the dam on the Barak river in Manipur, with Chakravarty saying Dhaka was consulted on the construction of the structure meant for generating hydro-electricity. Chakravarty, at a function in Dhaka two days ago, had said, “The so-called (Bangladeshi) water experts say India has violated international law, there is no binding international law on transnational rivers. Earlier BNP chief Khaleda Zia had sent a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to stop construction of the dam in upstream northeastern Manipur, claiming that it might cause “ecological catastrophe” in the region.
