Assembly by-elections : Reverses for the Congress |
 |
The Congress has suffered reverses in the Assembly byelections in Maharashtra and Rajasthan. In Maharashtra, the party has lost one of the two seats for which by-elections were held. It lost the Solapur by-election to the Shiv Sena, an ally of the BJP. The constituency had been represented by former Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde for over nine terms. The seat became vacant after Shinde was appointed the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. The Congress, however, retained the Nagpur South seat.
In Rajasthan also, the Congress suffered a set back when the BJP wrested the Luni Assembly seat by a margin of over 4,000 votes. The seat had been traditionally held by the Congress.
