Five killed, 17 injured in two grenade attacks In the run-up to the Republic Day, Assam’s major militant outfit, the ULFA, has stepped up its subversive activities in the state. Five persons, including three CRPF men, were killed and a motorcycle damaged in a grenade attack by the ULFA in central Assam’s Morigaon district on Monday, Jan. 14. According to police sources, the grenade was hurled by two motor-cycle-borne ULFA insurgents at a police security check post in front of the Zila Parishad office in Morigaon town at 7.20 p.m. on Jan. 14. A motorcycle parked in the area caught fire and was damaged. The injured were admitted to the Morigaon civil hospital. In another incident, 17 persons were injured in a grenade blast near the Guwahati railway station on Sunday, Jan. 13, on the eve of the Magh Bihu festival. This blast also occurred at 7.30 p.m. near the entrance of the station and the State Transport Corporation bus terminal, a few feet away from the boundary wall of the Paltan Bazar police station. Deputy Inspector General (Central Western Range) G.P. Singh told reporters that preliminary investigation indicated that the grenade was lobbed by a militant of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) at a CRPF platoon on patrol duty. Thirteen of the injured were rushed to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital while four were treated for splinter injuries at a nearby private hospital. In yet another incident, a top ULFA militant was killed in a gunfight with the Army in Arunachal Pradesh along the Assam border. The self-styled corporal of the elite strike force ’28 Battalion’ was killed at Kumari Gaon under Mahadevpur police station, defence officials said on Thursday, Jan. 17 On a tip-off that the militant was hiding in a house, the troops laid a trap, but he attempted to escape through the rear door firing at them. However, the troops chased him and gunned him down after a short run. A 9 mm pistol, a magazine and two live rounds of ammunition were recovered from him. ——————Box————— Assam’s first woman MP dead Assam’s first woman MP, Begum Mofida Ahmed, died in Jorhat on Thursday, Jan. 16. According to her family members, Mofida died of old-age ailments. She was 88. Begum Mofida was elected MP from the Jorhat constituency in 1957 on a Congress ticket.
