The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) which is spearheading the secessionist movement in the state with active support of Pakistan’s Inter-services Intelligence (ISI) and Muslim fundamentalist organizations, gunned down 14 of their colleagues who had abdicated violence and surrendered to the de jure government in the state.
The massacre took place on June 21 at a place called Moran in Dibrugarh district, where about 50 surrendered militants had gathered at a press club to discuss the floating of an non-government organisation (NGO) to carry out development works in the state.
Additional Inspector General of Police, (Law and Order), Ramani Barua, said suspected ULFA militants attacked the surrendered cadres when they were coming to attend the meeting. The militants first lobbed grenades and then fired from AK-47 assault rifles.
The attack on surrendered cadres by ULFA rebels was the second incident during the last week. Earlier, they had killed nine soldiers belonging to Assam Rifles at Nandang in Tinsukhia district. l
