Assam : AASU's 18-point questionnaire
News Behind The News

April 19, 2004

All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has come out with an 18-point questionnaire listing “burning issues.” The AASU outfit has desired all political parties, both national and regional, to answer the questionnaire.

The AASU has announced that it will throw its weight behind Lok Sabha candidates who give “convincing answers” to the questions, especially on the issues of repealing the controversial IMDT Act and constitutional safeguards to the indigenous people. However, according to reports, the parties have chosen not to answer any of the 18 questions posed by the AASU.

The ruling Congress has locked horns with the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the BJP on its most important battle for Guwahati. Polling for 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam is being held in two phases on April 20 and 26.

The AASU’s questionnaire had also included queries on the parties’ views on Delhi’s move to inter-link rivers, which the student body described as a ploy to take away waters of the Brahmaputra. The AASU has also sought opinions of the parties on 100 per cent reservation of jobs for local youth.

Taking a cue from the AASU’s 18-point questionnaire, the Assam unit of the BJP has come out with a booklet containing charges against the state government and asking it 100 queries.

The BJP has asked Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to give his views on infiltration from Bangladesh and the deteriorating law and order scenario in the State.
