'Indo-Russian trade close to $10 bn'
News Behind The News

May 26, 2008

According to a top official of the Russian Federation in Southern India, bilateral trade between Russia and India is poised to touch USD 10 billion by 2010, "The bilateral trade between the two countries at present is about USD five billion and within a couple of years it should go double," Blatislab V Antonyuk, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Southern India said at a function organised by International Cultural federation in Tiruchirapalli recently.

Pointing out that India currently accounts for a little over one per cent of Russia's total external trade volume, he said, "Energy and infrastructure development are the core areas Russia is interested in investment."

Antonyuk also expressed the hope that the Russian aided nuclear power plant at Koodangulam in Tamil Nadu would become operational by 2009.

Russia had sold weapons worth over USD 10 billion to India in the past five years. Contracts worth USD nine billion are on anvil, he said.

The two countries have also signed joint agreements to develop multi-purpose military transport aircraft and fifth generation fighter jets.

Many countries had evinced interest in procuring the Brahmos supersonic cruise missile, jointly developed by the two countries, he said.

Both the countries have gone for joint ventures in the field of diamond processing and marketing, he added.
